An Introduction to R for Management Scholars

Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University
Department of Strategic Management & Entrepreneurship
January 24, 2017
13:00 to 13:00

The open-source programming language R is currently the most widely used data science tool and its popularity is rapidly increasing. Originally developed for statisticians, R has evolved into a powerful data analysis environment that serves many purposes. Its versatility is the reason that R is popular among both scientists and practitioners: it is the fastest growing language used in academic articles and many companies — including Google, Facebook, and Microsoft — consider R as one of their primary data analysis tools.

The aim of this workshop is twofold. First, you will develop a general understanding of the programming language R, including its history, its strengths and weaknesses, and its performance compared to other software like SPSS and Stata. Second, you will learn how to use R as a management scholar, including importing, manipulating and visualizing data, and running basic statistical models (such as linear regression analysis).

The workshop is designed for people without any prior experience with R and those that want to refresh the basics.

At the end of the workshop you will understand: – What R is, how it works and why it’s different from SPSS or Stata – How to import data (e.g., Excel or SPSS files) – How to manipulate data (e.g., filter rows or creating subsets) – How to visualize data (e.g., creating scatter plots or histograms) – Which statistical techniques you can apply in R – How to do some basic statistical analyses (e.g., linear regression analysis, ANOVA) – Which R packages (add-ons) are useful for you as a management scholar – Where you need to go if you want to learn more about R

Please register for the workshop by filling out the form below. I will distribute further instructions on how to prepare for the workshop (including how to install R) once you have registered. Also, make sure you bring a laptop to the workshop to work on.

The workshop registration is closed.
